Description
Dr. Wishard founded the department of Urology in 1887 and served as chief for 49 years. In 1904 he served as president of the national AUA and in 1918 he served as vice president of the national American Medical Association. Henry O. Mertz was recruited from LaPorte, IN in 1918 and went on to become the second chairman in 1936. His notable contributions were in uro-pediatrics which had attracted him in his early practice. In the five-year period on the full-time staff prior to appointment to the chair in 1953, we had moved slowly toward a more functional service in a number of ways. Chairmanship, and that Dr. Donohue be strongly considered as my successor. Donohue's succession to the Chairmanship of the Department of Urology took place in September 1972. During the period 1972-1978 Donohue led the transition from solo geographic full-time practice in the University setting to corporate practice which greatly unified effort, availed us of greater recruiting attractiveness and made possible the expansion of our staff from three to nine surgeons. Dr. Koch joined the faculty and became Chairman of the Department of Urology at Indiana University School of Medicine in 1998.
