Nationally, clusters in this industry occur in California, Massachusetts, and the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. Yet, because of the importance of social networks a few large firms have contributed to the success of Central Indiana's life science cluster. Start-ups, consisting of former employees of the local giants, have the potential to develop into innovative firms, enhancing the cluster.
