The Institute for American Thought focuses on resources and scholarship relating to fundamental strongholds of American thought and culture.

IAT is comprised of English and Philosophy teaching faculty, editing specialists, graduate assistants, and scholars of the Peirce Edition Project, the Santayana Edition, and the Frederick Douglass Papers with related academic advisors in American Studies, Professional Editing, and American philosophy.

The Institute administers an undergraduate minor in American Studies and an intedisciplinary graduate program in Professional Editing; it also is associated with the American Philosophy concentration of the Department of Philosophy's master's program. In addition, the Institute provides an editorial home for Documentary Editing, the journal of the Association for Documentary Editing.
